SCUBA diving is an integral part of my research. I am always looking for opportunities to dive for research, teaching, or simply to explore the underwater world.
Dive Qualifications: I was a CAUS Scientific Diver at the University of Victoria, and I was qualified as an AAUS Science Diver during my time at University of Hawaii. I am trained as a NAUI Instructor, and I have instructed both open water divers and scientific divers in training. I am also a certified Divers Alert Network (DAN) Instructor. Research-Related Courses: I participated in the University of Hawaii Marine Option Program QUEST (Quantitative Underwater Ecological Survey Techniques) Program as a participant and subsequently as a team leader. I have also participated in the Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar a maritime archaeology leadership course conduced by the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Diving Fieldwork: Kiritimati - 2016 Field Season - I led a field season in March 2016 to re-sample tagged corals and to survey the full extent of the damage of the 2015-2016 El Niño event. 2015 Field Seasons - I conducted three field seasons (January, May, July) observing the dynamics of coral health during a storm event and during the development of the 2015 major El Niño event. 2014 Field Season - I conducted coral surveys and sampling, photographed each of our focal sites, and deployed long-term monitoring equipment. 2013 Field Season- I conducted ecological surveys as part of the Baum Lab 2013 field season to Kiritimati (Christmas Island). Our surveys included benthic photographs and videos, coral and algal sample collection, herbivore observations, and video equipment deployment/retrieval. Hawaii - Coral Health Project- I was the lead diver for my thesis research at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. This project included shore diving to photograph coral colonies and to conduct coral health assessments. Maritime Archaeology Mapping Project- I organized and lead a team to conduct a site assessment of a Hawaiian Sugar Steamer that sunk off the Northwest coast of Hawaii Island in 1913. We mapped the shipwreck site to determine changes in archaeological site structure over time. Diving Experience - Locations: British Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Indonesia, Kiritimati (Christmas Island), Mexico, Turkey, Utah, Washington State |
